I was shopping at Central Market the other day when I came across a “superfood chocolate drink.” Needless to say that I picked it up. I actually enjoyed the drink but challenged myself to recreate it at home, super-charging in even more with wholesome nutrition. Call this a chocolate drink or chocolate milk, but whatever you call it, it’s a little slice of heavenly bliss!
A quick run-down of the benefits
…For those of you that need a little reassurance that a little chocolate can actually be healthy.
Raw cacao powder: contains nearly four times the antioxidants than dark chocolate and 300 phytochemicals. Also contains protein, calcium, magnesium, flavonoids, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids.
Cacao butter: is the fat source used to make chocolate. It is primarily a saturated fat and has been said to improve skin health, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation.
Raw honey: a natural sweetener that is packed with antioxidants and even supports heart health! Raw honey has not been processed in a way that robs it of it’s nutritional benefits.
Celtic sea salt: Unlike table salt, Celtic sea salt is not processed nor are any preservatives added. Because of this, Celtic sea salt retains its 84 different trace minerals, that gives its beautiful gray color.
Turmeric: provides antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial benefits while also supporting digestion (by stimulating bile production). It also provides a slew of benefits including reducing risk of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, depression, and arthritis.
Collagen peptides: a natural grass-fed source of gelatin, this nutritional booster will provide added protein to the drink. Also, collagen peptides supports skin, bone, and joint health, as well as supports a healthy digestion.
1 cup liquid base – water (for dairy-free option), whole milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or other nut milk
1 tbsp cacao butter (note: this is different that coconut butter*)
2 tbsp cacao powder
drizzle of honey or maple syrup
sprinkle of Celtic sea salt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp collagen peptides
1. In a small saucepan, gently heat water and cacao butter over medium-low heat. Once cacao butter is melted, remove from heat.
2. Whisk in cacao powder, sea salt, and additional add-ins.
3. Transfer to a glass mason jar or other glass with a lid. Place in refrigerator to chill.
4. Once chilled, shake chocolate drink thoroughly and enjoy!
